Governance

The Role of the Governing Body

In general terms the Governors ensure our school has clear aims and values, and act as “critical friends” of the Headteacher and staff through looking at how the school is progressing. The GB is responsible for: senior appointments; ensuring the school’s money is well spent; making sure procedures are in place to ensure effective teaching and learning; examining the educational outcomes the school achieves; resolving grievances; overseeing the implementation of annual school development plans; and ensuring we regularly review how we are doing and how we could do better.

Membership

The Governing Body consists:
• 5 parent governors (elected by the Orchard parents)
• 1 staff governor
• 1 governor appointed by Hertfordshire Local Authority
• 4 co-opted governors (people who are invited to join the GB)
• The Headteacher
Extra people may be invited to join as associate (non-voting) governors.
Currently there is one vacancy for a co-opted governor.

When vacancies for governors arise we aim to fill them with people who have particular skills to offer the GB. These skills are the sort found in any reasonably sized organisation eg: site and building maintenance; IT; HR; finance.

Governor's 3 year strategy

There is a governance section of the school's three year strategy for school improvement.
  • Consider annually (commencing Sept 2016) whether further GB sub-committees are needed and, where appropriate, establish the required committee(s).
  • Establish a more focussed approach to Governor training by carrying out an audit of training needs at the beginning of each school year – commencing Sept 2016.
  • Investigate the options open to the school with regard to the process of becoming an academy, although the process of academisation, if undertaken, may not be completed within 2016-19.
